C&EN White Paper
An Analytical Toolbox for Next-Generation Polymer Materials
Brought to you by PerkinElmer
Overview

Advanced polymer materials are increasingly essential across aerospace, automotive, energy, and other high performance industries. Materials such as high temperature thermoplastics, polymer composites, and protective coatings must deliver reliable mechanical, thermal, and chemical performance under demanding conditions—often replacing metals and ceramics to enable lighter, more efficient designs.

These advanced materials are also complex, and small variations in structure, formulation, or processing can lead to performance limitations or failure. This white paper explores how spectroscopy and thermal analysis techniques—used individually and in combination—provide the chemical and physical insights needed to characterize next generation polymer materials, support quality control, and ensure consistent performance from research and development through real world use.

Key Objectives:
  • Examine core analytical techniques used to characterize advanced polymers, including FT IR, DSC, TGA, STA, and UV vis spectroscopy
  • Highlight real-world applications, including 3D printed PEEK components, renewable energy coatings, and graphene reinforced polymer composites
  • Explain how analytical data supports quality control, failure analysis, and consistent performance in high stakes applications
